Frequently Asked Questions

Q. ARE BASSETS GOOD FAMILY DOGS?

Yes, they are! Bassets are typically very gentle and patient with children. They are very social dogs who love being surrounded by their people and other dogs!

Q. DO BASSETS BARK OR HOWL A LOT?

AKC put it well when they said, “Bassets bark when necessary.” Now, you and your Basset may have differing ideas about when it is truly necessary to bark or howl. If a squirrel is invading your yard or a visitor is pulling into your driveway, you can expect to hear about it. Also, making sure your Basset is mentally stimulated is very important, as a bored Basset is far more likely to pass the time by barking at your neighbors while you are away at work.

Q. ARE BASSET HOUNDS STUBBORN?

This question is best answered with a bit of history of the breed. Bassets were bred to hunt independently of their handler. They were sent out to trail their quarry and would alert the handler when they had the animal located. Bassets needed to be intelligent, quick thinkers who could problem solve on their own to have a successful hunt. Just because your Basset is a pet doesn’t mean that those same hunting instincts don’t still exist in your dog! When training a Basset, the goal is to tap into that working side of their brain and get them to problem solve and learn what you are teaching. We highly recommend reading “When Pigs Fly, By Jane Killion” to understand and learn techniques for training an independent dog. With the proper methods, consistency, and some yummy treats, you can train your Basset to be a well-mannered family member.

Q. HAVE YOUR DOGS BEEN HEALTH TESTED?

They sure have! We follow the Basset Hound Club of America guidelines for genetic testing. We have happy, healthy dogs!

Q. WHAT KIND OF DOG FOOD DO YOU FEED?

Our Basset Puppies eat Life’s Abundance, All Life Stages. The dogs say it’s yummy, and I like the ingredients! Life’s Abundance came to our rescue when our old food began causing tummy upset, skin rashes, scabbing, and hair loss! Yikes!! After tons of research and trying different foods, this is where we landed! The company makes its food in the USA in small batches to keep things fresh, using only the finest ingredients. Life’s Abundance has never been recalled, and I bet you can’t find a bad review…believe me, I tried. Check them out at the link above. Your dogs will thank you!

Q. HOW OLD WILL MY PUPPY BE WHEN I PICK THEM UP?

Your sweet puppy will be a minimum of eight weeks old when they are ready to join your family!

Q. WHERE IS OUT WEST BASSETS LOCATED?

Our kennel is in the heart of our family cattle ranch outside Willcox, Arizona.

Q. CAN YOU DELIVER MY PUPPY?

While we prefer you come out to pick up your puppy in person, there are times when transporting is a good option. We work with wonderful transporters. Your pup will be in the best hands all the way to their forever home.
